Crepes hail from Melbourne, Victoria and on Friday 25th of January they played their first show in Brisbane. Apparently it should have been their second show in Brisbane, but their previous attempt at getting to the Sunshine State was ruined by the band missing their flight up.

The band were up touring their latest release and debut album “In Cahoots,” which shares an up-beat, casual perspective of life from the 5-piece and was the Double J feature album in November 2018.

Crepes’ stage presence was a perfect match to their music - a little bit awkward (in a charming way), relaxed, comfortable and casual. They’re the kind of band that you get chatting to at a gig and end up being good friends with almost by accident. The effortless hooks (from the vocals, guitar and synth) blend together in a fuzzy landscape of jangly pop that is both engaging and relaxing.

 

The Bearded Lady was packed out early for local personalities These Guy and Brisbane newcomers Olivia's World and stayed packed for Crepes.

 

Hits like ‘Dark Demons,’ ‘The Drag’ and ‘Mild Coversation’ are unassuming bops that is the crowd totally captured by the light-hearted but endearing hooks and melodies, and ‘Bicycle Man’ had everyone dancing along with pure joy. Crepes manage to play totally enchanting and complex music with a completely undemanding and friendly essence. The band worked as a unit in their delivery of the set - a very well oiled machine with satisfying flourishes interplaying from a jazzy sounding piano and jangly guitar lines. The front-man had a kind of meandering approach to being a front man which was very endearing. The band just seemed to be having fun and playing music with their best friends, which is honestly so heart warming.

 

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The band performed a totally gleeful set that left me feeling totally content and had me singing the songs days after. I would recommend everyone get listening to Crepes to bring a little happiness into the every day.
