Last Friday night Photographer/M80 Robbie and myself made our way over to Rics bar with a small platoon of chums to check out Melbourne duo From Oslo. My first live experience of a band I’d heard many good things about was extra special, as Drummer Joel Penman is the older brother of my high school mate, James Penman. With the company of James, his Dad Bruce, and a rowdy Rics crowd, From Oslo definitely packed a wallop. My first impression of the duo left me questioning how two dudes could provide that much noise. They're one of those bands where each song demands a sing along and it's impossible to not feel completely animated. Although Rics' sound struggled a little to begin with, this didn't hinder the two from smashing out an intense gig. This two piece Melbourne band comprising of Joshua De Laurentiis (Guitar/Vocals) and Joel Penman (Drums, backing vocals) have had a huge year launching their new EP No Sound which has been embraced around the country.

 

Since their debut release in 2015, From Oslo have caught much attention gaining a high rotation slot on Triple J Unearthed and smashing shows in their home town of Melbourne. Now in 2016, this band continues to bring the noise with No Sound being touted at venues in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart. No Sound was recorded in the boys’ hometown of Melbourne with rising producer Jez Giddings (Clowns, Sincerely Grizzly) and has been likened in playlists to bands like Luca Brasi, Bad//Dreems and Violent Soho.  As Triple J's Richard Kingsmill stated, "this band has the hooks to match the power" and he couldn't be more right with From Oslo's DZ Deathrays/Violent Soho inspired rock leaving myself absolutely knackered by the end of the set. I can comfortably say that Faking the Benz and No Sound will be on high rotation in my playlists for weeks to come.

The boys played tracks from their EP's new and old, as well as covering and encoring with The Peep Tempel's 'Carol'. Finishing with Carol was a treat as I feel no one can be unhappy screaming, "I don't want to be a fucking Christmas ham" in a small venue with great company. The gig was one thunderous crescendo with each track bringing as much intensity as the last. With rumours of the band returning later on this year, I can't wait to see what From Oslo have in store for next time.
